Ingredients
Scale
- 3 large russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 ½ cups heavy cream
- 1 ½ cups shredded Gruyère or cheddar cheese
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
- Make the sauce: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant. Stir in heavy cream, salt, pepper, and thyme. Heat until warm but do not boil.
- Layer the ingredients: Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Sprinkle with half the cheese and pour half of the cream mixture over them. Repeat with the remaining potatoes, cheese, and sauce.
- Bake the gratin: Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
- Let it rest for 5-10 minutes before serving for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, broil the gratin for 2-3 minutes at the end.
- Use a mandoline slicer for evenly cut potatoes.
- Substitute heavy cream with half-and-half for a lighter version.
